Drivers See Fall in Gas Prices

Washington, D.C. (KFMO) - Motorists across the United States are seeing some relief at the gas pump as fuel prices continue to move downward following weeks of volatility.

According to AAA, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4.16 as of June 8. Missouri drivers continue to pay less than the national average, with the statewide average at $3.83 per gallon.

AAA Missouri reports the statewide average has fallen over 10 cents in the past week. The organization attributes the decline to improving fuel supplies and easing pressure in energy markets after significant price increases earlier this spring.

Locally, drivers in St. Francois County are also benefiting from lower prices. While county averages fluctuate daily, prices have retreated from the higher levels seen during April and May when many stations approached or exceeded the $4-per-gallon mark. AAA data continues to show St. Francois County fuel prices generally tracking near or slightly above the Missouri average.

Despite the recent decline, fuel costs remain higher than they were a year ago. AAA analysts say motorists should continue to watch market conditions as summer travel demand increases, although current trends suggest additional price stability may be possible in the coming weeks.
