Crystal City and Festus Explore Potential Fire Department Merger

Jefferson Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Crystal City and Festus are forming a joint exploratory committee to evaluate a potential merger of their fire departments, with the goal of determining whether a combined department could strengthen fire and emergency services while using taxpayer funds responsibly.

The committee will review the current operations of both departments, including response capabilities, staffing, equipment, facilities and costs.

Officials will also examine how a potential merger could affect residents and firefighters in both communities. The committee will consider other ways the two departments could work together, even if a full merger is not ultimately recommended.

The cities emphasize that no decision to merge the fire departments has been made. Any proposal would require further review and action by both city governments.

Crystal City and Festus say public safety will be a central consideration throughout the process, along with a detailed examination of the financial and operational effects of any proposed changes.

The cities plan to provide updates as the committee's research progresses. Public meetings and open houses will be scheduled as information becomes available and issues are identified that would benefit from community discussion.

Residents, firefighters and other stakeholders will have opportunities to ask questions and provide input before any recommendation moves forward.

In a joint statement, the cities said the study is an opportunity to examine how the communities can best serve residents in the years ahead.

The joint exploratory committee will include the mayors, city administrators, fire chiefs and one council member from both municipalities.
