Mastodon State Historic Site Celebrates 50th Anniversary Sept. 5

Imperial, Mo. (KFMO) - Mastodon State Historic Site in Imperial is turning 50 years old this year, and the public is invited to celebrate the milestone Saturday, September 5.

The anniversary event will feature free admission to the site's museum from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free live music and interpretive programs will also be offered in the picnic area from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The celebration is open to everyone, and no registration is required. Those attending the outdoor activities are encouraged to bring snacks, drinks, sunscreen and lawn chairs.

Mastodon State Historic Site is home to the Kimmswick Bone Bed, an important archaeological and paleontological site. Scientists discovered the first solid evidence there of humans and the American mastodon coexisting in eastern North America.

Visitors can learn about the discovery and explore what Missouri's landscape looked like during prehistoric times. The site includes a museum with displays of ancient artifacts and fossils, along with an impressive replica of a mastodon skeleton.

Mastodon State Historic Site is located at 1050 Charles J. Becker Drive in Imperial.
