Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri law enforcement agencies are turning to a unique tool in an effort to generate new leads in unsolved cases.
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway, in partnership with the FBI, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri Department of Corrections and law enforcement agencies across the state, has announced Missouri's participation in the second edition of the Cold Case Playing Cards program.
The playing cards are being distributed throughout Missouri Department of Corrections facilities. Each card features a photograph and information about an unsolved homicide, missing person or unidentified remains case.
The program is designed to encourage incarcerated individuals who may have information about one of the cases to come forward and provide investigators with new leads.
"When cold cases are solved, it can bring needed closure to the families living with the pain of the unknown," Hanaway said. "My office is proud to collaborate with the FBI and state agencies to uncover new information that could lead to a crack in the case. We will exhaust every resource to bring justice to Missouri families in pain."
More than 25 states have participated in the FBI's Cold Case Playing Cards program. Officials say the initiative has helped revitalize investigations and, in some cases, provided answers to families who have waited years for information.
FBI Kansas City Special Agent in Charge Chris Ormerod said the initiative is one of several tools being used to generate additional information about Missouri's unsolved cases.
"Many families have continued to suffer for years while they wait for justice in unsolved homicides, missing persons, or unidentified remains in cases that have gone cold," Ormerod said. "At the FBI, we're committed in bringing the full weight of our office to solving these cases. This playing card initiative is just one way in attempting to generate additional leads."
Missouri State Highway Patrol Colonel Michael A. Turner said the program provides another opportunity to uncover information that could help investigators.
"The Missouri State Highway Patrol and our law enforcement partners remain committed to finding answers for the family and friends of those impacted by unsolved crimes," Turner said. "The Cold Case Card program is a valuable tool to help generate new leads and uncover critical information that may help bring these cases closer to resolution."
Missouri Department of Corrections Acting Director Valarie Moseley said incarcerated Missourians may possess information that could be valuable to investigators.
"Solving cold cases requires persistence, ingenuity and collaboration — not only among state, local and federal agencies but also among all Missouri residents who might hold missing pieces to the puzzle," Moseley said. "By bringing these cards into our state prisons, we give incarcerated Missourians the opportunity to play a part in finding justice for victims and their families."
