Missouri Measles Case Prompts Possible Exposure Warning On Amtrak Train

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - A Missouri resident confirmed to have measles may have exposed others while traveling through the Sedalia train station last month, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

The individual boarded Amtrak Train 318, which was bound for Chicago, at the Sedalia station on August 27, 2026. Health officials say the individual is not a Pettis County resident and was only traveling through the Sedalia station while en route to their intended destination.

Available information about the possible measles exposure remains limited at this time. Additional details will be released if they become available.

Anyone who may have been exposed should monitor for symptoms of measles for 21 days from the date of exposure and contact their local public health agency if symptoms develop.

People who believe they may have measles should isolate themselves and call their healthcare provider before going to a medical office or testing location. They should tell the provider they are concerned about possible measles and follow instructions for being evaluated without exposing other people to the virus.

Health officials say there is generally no reason for people to be alarmed when appropriate precautions are taken. However, people who are not vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella should talk with their physician about vaccination and the best way to protect themselves and their families.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications, particularly in people who are not protected through vaccination.

Health officials note that one dose of the MMR vaccine provides about 93% protection against measles, while two doses provide about 97% protection. Community protection, or herd immunity, is generally reached when about 95% of people are protected.

That level of community protection is particularly important for people who cannot be vaccinated because of their age or certain medical circumstances.

More information about measles, including county-level MMR vaccination rates in Missouri, is available from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
