St. Francois Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Fire crews from several area departments spent Thursday afternoon fighting multiple brush fires along Highway 67 from Hildebrecht Road in Farmington south, past the Madison County line.
Crews from Wolf Creek, Doe Run, Farmington, Fredericktown and Cherokee Pass responded to numerous fires burning in the median of Highway 67, as well as along the sides of the highway in some areas.
The fires created hazardous conditions for motorists, and at one point, a portion of Highway 67 had to be shut down while firefighters worked to control the flames.
The exact cause of the fires has not been determined.
Extremely dry conditions and a lack of recent moisture allowed vegetation along the highway to ignite and burn rapidly, creating additional challenges for firefighters.
No injuries were reported.
