Washington Co., Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri Route 8 bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad in Washington County near Potosi is nearly complete, with two-way traffic now restored.
The Missouri Department of Transportation says construction crews reopened the bridge to two-way traffic Wednesday afternoon. Temporary traffic signals that had directed motorists through a single open lane since March 2025 have been turned off.
The bridge rehabilitation project experienced several delays during construction, including worker injuries, work stoppages requested by the railroad and other construction issues. Those delays pushed the project well beyond its original September 2025 completion date.
While the main construction work is nearly finished, the contractor will return to install fencing at the site. A date for that work has not yet been determined. Short-term single-lane closures will be necessary while the fencing is installed.
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $2,125,614.69 contract to S & A Equipment & Builders, LLC, during its September 2024 meeting. The project involved rehabilitation of the bridge deck, or driving surface.
With two-way traffic restored, motorists traveling Route 8 near Potosi no longer have to wait for the temporary signals that had been in place during the extended construction project.
