Above Average Radionuclides in Farmington Public Water Supply System

Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - Farmington City Officials are informing citizens of a water standard test that revealed a higher than average radionuclides (Radium-226 and Radium-228) in Well 7 located near the Farmington Water Park and Civic Center area.

A public notice sent out by the city shows that 5.83 picocuries per liter (PCI/L) recorded during the Running Annual Average (RAA) for the period ending June 30, 2025; which is 0.83 higher than the maximum contaminant level (MCL).

According to the notice, this is not an immediate risk and there is no need for an alternative water supply. Although the notice also states that individuals who drink water containing radionuclides in excess of the MCL (5.00 PCI/L) over many years have an increased risk of developing cancer.

Additionally, the public notice says the other 13 wells within the Farmington Public Water Supply System are in compliance with the standard and well 7 has been taken out of service while crews evaluate the situation and work with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to regain compliance.
