Extreme Heat and Humidity Can Cause Health Issues

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - The National Weather Service continues to warn residents across the Parkland to take precautions, as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through Thursday evening.

Heat and humidity are expected to intensify, with heat index values exceeding 100 degrees and potentially climbing above 105 at times. The Environmental Public Health Specialist & Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, with the St. Francois County Health Center, Donovan Kleinberg, says since many people have to work outside during hot weather there are signs of heat related illness we should be aware of.

Kleinberg adds if you're experiencing heat exhaustion rest, get cool, and hydrate yourself.

For heat stroke call 911 for immediate medical attention. Forecasters say the most dangerous conditions are expected south of the Missouri River, where limited cloud cover and minimal rainfall will allow temperatures to soar. Areas farther north may see some relief thanks to increased chances for thunderstorms and cloud cover, which could help suppress the heat.

Officials urge you to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated, and check on the elderly, pets, and those without access to air conditioning.
