Washington, D.C. (KFMO) - The United States is seeing a growing measles outbreak, with roughly 750 cases reported so far this year.
Last year, around 2,000 cases were recorded nationwide. Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb emphasized the importance of public education in preventing the disease.
He noted that the herd immunity rate is about 95% vaccination in a community. In certain pockets of the country, it is well below that. He says if you look at some states, there are communities where the vaccination rate is about 70%.
Health officials continue to urge parents and communities to ensure vaccinations are up to date to prevent further spread of measles, a highly contagious viral infection.
