Memorial Day Travel Expected to Break Records Despite Higher Gas Prices

Washington, D.C. (KFMO) - AAA predicts this Memorial Day weekend could set new travel records as tens of millions of Americans head out for holiday trips. Increased road travel and packed airports are expected nationwide as families begin summer vacations and holiday gatherings.

According to AAA, travelers are continuing with their plans despite rising fuel costs in many states, including Missouri.

Gas prices have increased over the last several days locally and statewide. Missouri’s average gas price is now sitting at $4.20 per gallon. In St. Francois County, the average price is slightly lower at $4.18 per gallon.

Travel experts say drivers should expect heavier-than-normal traffic, especially during peak travel times leading into the holiday weekend. Airports are also expected to see large crowds as airline travel continues to rebound heading into the summer season.

Officials encourage travelers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and monitor weather and traffic conditions before departing.
