Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - The American Red Cross in Missouri is asking eligible donors to roll up their sleeves, as the organization faces what it calls a severe blood shortage statewide.
Account Manager Tara Lincoln says blood supplies are down about 35 percent, largely due to dozens of blood drive cancellations so far this winter. While all blood types are needed, Lincoln says there is an especially urgent demand for O-negative, A-negative, and B-negative blood.
Lincoln notes that blood donations are critical for hospitals to treat trauma patients, conduct surgeries, and provide care for those with chronic illnesses.
Most donors must be at least 18 years old, but 16- and 17-year-olds may donate if they meet height and weight requirements and have parental consent. Donors must generally weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good overall health, and bring a valid photo ID. Whole blood donors can typically give once every 56 days. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins may be accepted depending on availability.
