Bonne Terre, Mo. (KFMO) - The Bonne Terre Police Department is urging motorists to use extra caution while traveling along newly paved sections of U.S. 67 after officers responded to a weekend traffic crash where roadway and weather conditions may have been contributing factors.
According to police, freshly paved asphalt can become especially slick during wet conditions, creating hazardous driving situations for motorists. Officials also noted that the temporary absence of pavement markings may make it more difficult for drivers to properly judge lane positioning.
The department is reminding motorists to exercise increased awareness while traveling through active construction zones and roadway improvement areas.
Police encourage drivers to:
- Reduce speed in construction zones
- Increase following distance between vehicles
- Stay alert for changing traffic patterns
- Watch carefully for construction workers and roadway equipment operating near traffic lanes
Officials say slowing down and remaining focused behind the wheel can help improve safety for both motorists and road crews working in the area.
