California Brothers Sentenced to Decades in Prison for Supplying Meth, Fentanyl, Cocaine to Southeast Missouri Drug Ring

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (KFMO) - Two California brothers have been sentenced to lengthy federal prison terms for their roles in supplying large quantities of methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine to a drug trafficking organization operating in southeast Missouri.

U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr. sentenced 32-year-old Lorenzo A. Marquez to 360 months, or 30 years, in federal prison. His younger brother, 28-year-old Adam A. Marquez, was sentenced to 204 months, or 17 years.

A federal jury convicted both men in March on one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances after finding they were responsible for supplying at least 500 grams of methamphetamine, 400 grams of fentanyl and 500 grams of cocaine to co-conspirators in Missouri.

According to evidence presented during the trial, the Marquez brothers operated as California-based suppliers, arranging for illegal drugs to be shipped, driven or transported through checked baggage on commercial airlines into Missouri.

The investigation resulted in several major drug seizures. Authorities recovered 2,973 fentanyl pills and 391 MDMA pills in Nashville. Three drug couriers were intercepted in Detroit while traveling to southeast Missouri carrying approximately 60 pounds of methamphetamine and nearly three pounds of cocaine. In Perry County, investigators also discovered about 20 pounds of methamphetamine, 4.5 pounds of cocaine and 315 grams of fentanyl inside a suitcase.

Federal prosecutors said the trafficking operation relied on hundreds of commercial airline trips to move narcotics across the country. In a sentencing memorandum, Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Shelton described Lorenzo and Adam Marquez as likely the most prolific drug suppliers ever prosecuted in the history of the Southeastern Division of the Eastern District of Missouri.

The brothers were among eight people indicted in July 2023. The remaining defendants pleaded guilty before trial.

Among those previously sentenced, 25-year-old Javontrey L. Wiley received 144 months in federal prison after admitting he provided security for the organization's leaders, handled drugs and cash, managed lower-level participants and participated in drug trafficking. Another California-based supplier, 52-year-old Oluwasegun Odumuyiwa, was sentenced to 76 months in prison.
