Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - The City of Farmington Public Works Department is preparing for a significant winter storm as the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for St. Francois County.
The warning goes into effect at midnight Friday and will remain in place through 6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 25. Forecasts call for heavy snowfall, with accumulations between 5 and 10 inches, and locally higher amounts possible.
Public Works crews from the Street, Water, and Electric Departments are making preparations to respond to hazardous conditions and potential service disruptions throughout the weekend.
Street Department
The National Weather Service warns that rapid snow accumulation could make travel extremely difficult or impossible during the storm. Residents who live on city streets are asked to park vehicles off the roadway, if possible, to allow crews to plow more safely and efficiently.
The City of Farmington maintains more than 100 miles of streets within city limits. Plowing typically begins once snow reaches one inch, with priority given to main and primary roadways. Officials note that plowing operations take time, and roads may remain partially snow- or ice-covered until temperatures rise or sunshine aids in melting.
Motorists are urged to use caution, as plowed roads can still be slick. Residents are also reminded that snow pushed to the side of the road during plowing may block driveways, which is an unavoidable part of snow removal operations. Homeowners may need to shovel driveways following heavy snowfall.
Water Department
With below-freezing temperatures expected, the Farmington Water Department is reminding residents to take steps to prevent frozen pipes. Recommendations include leaving a small stream of water running during prolonged freezing conditions, securing manufactured home skirting, ensuring proper insulation, removing garden hoses from outdoor faucets, and knowing how to shut off the home’s water supply.
Residents are encouraged to contact a licensed plumber if pipes freeze. Water line breaks should be reported to the Development Services Department at 573-756-0608 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or after hours by calling 573-431-3131.
Electric Department
Farmington City Light and Water customers experiencing power outages are asked to report them to the 24-hour notification line at 833-990-3370. Customers may call or text the number and may receive text updates when available. Outages can also be reported through the Farmington MO Citizen Services app. Updates will be shared on the Farmington Missouri Public Works Facebook page as information becomes available.
Residents who lose power and rely on in-home medical equipment are advised to go to the Farmington Police Department or Fire Department, which are open 24/7, or contact Central Dispatch at 573-431-3131 for assistance.
City officials also stress generator safety, reminding residents never to use generators, grills, camp stoves, or other fuel-burning devices indoors or in enclosed spaces due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Those needing assistance with utility bills may qualify for energy assistance through East Missouri Action Agency by calling 573-431-5191 or visiting eastmoaa.org.
The City of Farmington Public Works Department will have crews working throughout the weekend to respond to snow accumulations, power outages, and other weather-related emergencies. For more information, contact the Development Services Department at 573-756-0608 or visit farmington-mo.gov.
