Extreme Heat Warning Issued Across the Parkland Through Saturday

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect across the Parkland through 9 p.m. Saturday, with dangerously hot conditions and heat index values reaching as high as 107 degrees.

The warning includes Crawford, Washington, Iron, Madison, Reynolds, Jefferson, St. Francois and Ste. Genevieve counties.

Health officials warn that the combination of extreme heat and high humidity can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned locations when possible and limit time spent in direct sunlight.

Those who must work or spend time outdoors should take extra precautions, including wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Strenuous activities should be moved to the early morning or evening when temperatures are lower, if possible.

Residents are also encouraged to check on relatives, friends and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, even for a short period of time.

Officials say residents should know the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone experiencing the effects of extreme heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and 911 should be called immediately.
