Extreme Heat Warning Issued for St. Francois, and Surrounding Counties, Through Friday Night

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - The National Weather Service in St. Louis has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for portions of southeast Missouri, including St. Francois, Iron, Jefferson, Madison, Ste. Genevieve and Washington counties. The warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. Friday.

Forecasters warn that dangerously hot temperatures combined with high humidity will produce heat index values as high as 107 degrees, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Officials urge residents to take precautions by staying hydrated, spending time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, limiting outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

Those who must work or spend time outdoors should schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas and, when possible, move strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours.

The National Weather Service also reminds residents to check on elderly family members, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat. Children and pets should never be left unattended inside vehicles, even for a short time, as interior temperatures can rise rapidly to life-threatening levels.

Officials say it's important to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone suffering from heat stroke should be moved to a cool location immediately, and 911 should be called without delay.
