Extreme Winter Cold Pushes Up Utility Bills in Farmington

Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - Extended periods of extreme winter cold have led to increased electricity usage and higher utility bills for residents in Farmington.

Farmington City Light & Water officials say when outdoor temperatures drop significantly below indoor temperatures, homes require more energy to stay warm. That increased demand was especially noticeable during January and February, when Farmington experienced prolonged extreme cold. As a result, residents are seeing higher-than-average electric usage reflected on bills received in January, February, and March, depending on individual billing cycles.

Households that rely on electric heat saw the greatest increases. In addition, wholesale energy prices rose during winter storm conditions, further contributing to higher monthly bills.

To help manage seasonal spikes, residents are encouraged to consider Budget Billing. This program provides a consistent monthly payment based on average usage. Customers must have an active account for at least six months to qualify. Sign-up and additional details are available through the Farmington City Light & Water office.

Residents struggling to pay their utility bills may qualify for energy assistance through East Missouri Action Agency. Applications can be completed at the Farmington City Light & Water office, by calling 573-431-5191, or by visiting eastmoaa.org.

The Missouri Public Utility Alliance also recommends several steps to help reduce energy usage and lower heating costs during cold weather, including regularly changing furnace filters, sealing drafts around doors and windows, keeping vents clear, adjusting ceiling fans to circulate warm air, and lowering thermostat settings when away from home.

For additional information about utility bills or available assistance, residents can visit Farmington City Light & Water at 101 South Jefferson Street or call 573-756-2620. Officials say staff are committed to working with customers who may need help and appreciate patience and courtesy when discussing billing concerns.
