Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - A dangerous stretch of hot and humid weather is expected across the Parkland through Tuesday evening, prompting a Heat Advisory that remains in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Forecasters say temperatures Monday will climb into the mid-90s, but high humidity will make it feel much hotter, with heat index values reaching as high as 107 degrees.
The heat will intensify Tuesday, with afternoon highs expected to approach 100 degrees. Combined with oppressive humidity, heat index values could soar to 112 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors.
Health officials warn that prolonged exposure to the heat can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, and postpone strenuous outdoor work or exercise until the early morning or evening.
Anyone who must work outside should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
Officials also remind the public to check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to the extreme heat. Children and pets should never be left unattended in parked vehicles, even for a short period, as interior temperatures can rise to deadly levels within minutes.
If someone begins showing signs of heat stroke, including confusion, loss of consciousness, or a high body temperature, move them to a cooler location immediately and call 911. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention.
