Jefferson Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Another scam is making the rounds in Jefferson County, with callers falsely claiming to be from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials say the scammers tell residents there is a warrant out for their arrest and demand immediate payment of fines and fees over the phone to avoid being taken into custody.
Grant Bissell, Public Safety Information Coordinator with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, says the calls are not legitimate.
Bissell stresses that the Sheriff’s Office will never call and demand payment over the phone, nor will they threaten arrest if money is not immediately sent. He says if you receive a call like this, simply hang up and do not provide any personal or financial information.
If you are concerned you may have an actual warrant, Bissell says you can verify it yourself online by visiting courts.mo.gov/casenet and using the Litigant Name Search feature. Anyone who believes they have been targeted by this scam is encouraged to report it to local law enforcement.
