St. Louis, Mo. (KFMO) - Lightning safety is the focus Tuesday during Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week.
The National Weather Service warns that lightning can strike several miles away from the center of a thunderstorm, even when skies overhead may not appear threatening.
Safety experts emphasize a simple rule: When thunder roars, go indoors.
Residents are urged to:
- Leave elevated areas immediately
- Avoid isolated trees and open fields
- Seek shelter inside a sturdy building
- Use a fully enclosed, hard-topped vehicle if a building is not available
- Outdoor activities should be postponed when thunderstorms are in the forecast. Lightning remains one of the most unpredictable and dangerous storm hazards.
Preparedness Week continues with tornado safety on Wednesday.
