Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Cold weather made itself known this past weekend across the Parkland, and more frigid conditions are on the way.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions as dangerously low temperatures increase the risk of frostbite. Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Chief Medical Officer Dr. Heidi Miller says frostbite is a major concern during periods of extreme cold.
Dr. Miller adds that in some cases it can be difficult to tell if frostbite is developing, and one way to check is by looking at fingernails and changes in skin color.
She says some of the earliest signs of frostbite include pain and tingling, but the most important warning sign is a loss of feeling in the affected area. Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors, wear warm layers, and protect exposed skin as cold temperatures continue across the Parkland.
