Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri’s annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins Friday, August 7, giving families a chance to save money on qualifying purchases before the start of the school year.
The tax-free weekend runs through Sunday, August 9 at midnight. During the holiday, certain back-to-school purchases including clothing, school supplies, computers, and other qualifying items will be exempt from state and local sales and use taxes.
Missouri Department of Revenue Director Trish Vincent says there are many items included in the holiday.
Qualifying purchases during the holiday will have a sales and use tax rate of zero percent. Retailers will report those qualifying sales as a negative adjustment on their sales and use tax returns.
Vincent says the weekend is designed to help families reduce the cost of preparing for the school year.
The Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday applies to eligible purchases made beginning Friday, August 7 at 12:01 a.m. and ending Sunday, August 9 at midnight.
Items that may qualify include clothing, shoes, backpacks, school supplies, computers, and other electronics as defined by Missouri law.
