Missouri Lawmakers Debate Senate Bill 888 Aimed at Tougher Sentences for Violent Criminals

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri lawmakers spent several hours discussing Senate Bill 888, legislation supporters say is designed to strengthen criminal sentencing laws and improve public safety across the state.

The proposal focuses on what sponsors describe as flaws in the current sentencing system that can allow some violent offenders to leave prison after serving only a small portion of their sentence.

Senate Bill 888 would require offenders to serve between 25 percent and 85 percent of their sentence depending on the severity of the crime. Supporters say the change is meant to ensure greater accountability for serious offenses and prevent repeat violent offenders from returning to communities too quickly.

One of the major focuses of the legislation is tougher penalties for crimes involving children. The bill increases sentencing requirements for child sex crimes and attempts to close legal loopholes that lawmakers say have allowed some offenders to receive reduced sentences.

Supporters argue the proposal would help ensure that individuals convicted of violent felonies or crimes against children face decades in prison, and in some cases life without parole.

The legislation also includes provisions involving the juvenile justice system. Juvenile court proceedings would remain private to protect minors, but the bill still allows for violent juveniles to be charged as adults when prosecutors determine it is appropriate.

Senate Bill 888 also provides counties the option to form regional detention facilities if approved by voters. Lawmakers say this could help rural counties share resources and reduce costs associated with operating local detention centers.

Another provision limits the use of restraints on juveniles, allowing them only in situations involving serious offenses or immediate safety risks.

Supporters say the overall goal of Senate Bill 888 is to create safer communities, strengthen accountability in the criminal justice system, and provide better protection for victims and children throughout Missouri.
