Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - The president of Missouri's State Board of Education has stepped down, creating a leadership change for the board overseeing public education across the state.
The Missouri State Board of Education announced Tuesday that State Board President Mary Schrag has resigned from the board, effective immediately.
Schrag was appointed to the State Board in 2019 by former Governor Mike Parson and has served during a period of significant discussion and policy development affecting Missouri's public education system.
In a statement released by the State Board, Schrag said the timing felt appropriate as newer members have become established and additional appointments are expected.
"With new State Board members well established and more on the way, this is a natural and logical time for me to step away," Schrag said. "It's been an honor to serve Missouri students alongside all the State Board members."
Under Missouri law, members of the State Board of Education are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Missouri Senate. The Governor's Office will determine the process for selecting a replacement to fill the vacancy left by Schrag's departure.
Schrag also emphasized that her commitment to education in Missouri remains unchanged.
"Please know that my support for public education in Missouri is not going anywhere," she said.
Following Schrag's resignation, State Board Vice President Brooks Miller will assume the role of State Board President on an interim basis. The board is scheduled to hold officer elections during its June 23 meeting.
The leadership transition comes as the State Board continues its oversight of education policy, standards, and initiatives affecting schools and students throughout Missouri.
