Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - The Parkland is facing a significant severe weather threat today, with forecasters placing the region under a Moderate Risk for storms capable of producing dangerous and potentially life-threatening conditions.
A Tornado Watch is now in effect for the area until 9 p.m. Monday, meaning conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop Monday afternoon and continue into the evening hours, with the primary threat window running from 2 to 10 p.m. In St. Francois County, the highest risk is expected between 3 and 7 p.m., when conditions are most favorable for severe storm development.
Meteorologists warn that storms could produce very large hail, up to baseball size or larger, along with damaging winds exceeding 70 miles per hour. Tornadoes are also a major concern, with the potential for a few strong tornadoes rated EF-2 or higher.
Storms are expected to initially form as discrete supercells during the afternoon. These types of storms are capable of producing the most intense severe weather, including large hail and strong tornadoes. As the evening progresses, storms are expected to evolve into a more linear or mixed mode, which may shift the primary threat toward widespread damaging winds, while still maintaining the risk for weaker tornadoes.
There remains some uncertainty regarding exactly when and where this transition will occur, but forecasters emphasize that all hazards, including tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds, are possible throughout the evening.
Most locations will likely experience severe weather impacts for a relatively brief period, typically less than one hour. However, conditions could deteriorate rapidly, making it critical for residents to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
Residents are urged to review their severe weather safety plans, identify a safe shelter location, and remain weather aware throughout the day, especially with the Tornado Watch in effect through the evening hours.
