MSHP Urges Safe Travel and Boating During Fourth of July Holiday

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - As thousands of Missourians prepare to travel and celebrate Independence Day, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding everyone to make smart decisions and put safety first throughout the holiday weekend.

Sergeant Dallas Thompson says the key to enjoying the holiday is making safety a priority before heading out on the roads or attending celebrations.

The Highway Patrol is also emphasizing the importance of water safety. Thompson says wearing a properly fitted life jacket whenever you're near, on, or in the water can save lives and significantly reduce the risk of drowning during one of the busiest boating weekends of the year.

Officials encourage drivers to buckle up, avoid distractions, never drive impaired, and remain alert for increased holiday traffic. Boaters are also reminded to operate responsibly and ensure everyone on board has access to a life jacket.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol's 2026 Independence Day holiday counting period begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 2, and runs through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 5. During that time, troopers will be working to keep Missouri's highways and waterways safe while responding to crashes, boating incidents, and assisting stranded motorists.
