Potosi, Mo. (KFMO) - The Potosi Police Department is increasing enforcement of Missouri's crosswalk laws as part of an ongoing effort to improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists throughout the community.
The department announced that officers have begun enhanced patrols focused on crosswalk safety, with enforcement taking effect immediately. The initiative is designed to encourage drivers and pedestrians alike to follow traffic laws that help prevent accidents.
Police are reminding drivers to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks, remain alert behind the wheel, avoid distractions, slow down near schools, parks, and heavily traveled intersections, and never pass a vehicle that has stopped for someone crossing the street.
Pedestrians are also encouraged to do their part by using marked crosswalks whenever possible, looking left, right, and left again before entering the roadway, making eye contact with drivers before crossing, and staying off their phones while walking across streets.
According to the department, increased enforcement combined with public education is intended to reduce pedestrian crashes and create a safer environment for everyone traveling through Potosi.
The Potosi Police Department says officers will continue enforcing Missouri's crosswalk laws while encouraging both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant and share responsibility for roadway safety.
