Herculaneum, Mo. (KFMO) - A small earthquake was recorded in eastern Missouri and western Illinois Sunday night.
According to preliminary data, the magnitude 2.0 earthquake struck at approximately 8:23 p.m. near Herculaneum, along the northern edge of the broader Illinois Basin–Ozark Dome region. The area borders the more seismically active New Madrid seismic zone.
The quake occurred at a depth of about 7 miles, with the epicenter located roughly 4 miles east-southeast of Herculaneum and about 5 miles east-northeast of Festus.
While the earthquake was minor, some residents may have felt brief shaking. No damage or injuries were reported as a result of the quake.
