Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - Three small earthquakes were recorded across southeast Missouri between late Monday night and Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The first earthquake occurred at approximately 10:41 p.m. Monday in northwestern Butler County. The magnitude 2.9 quake was centered about 8.7 miles south-southwest of Williamsville and originated at a depth of less than one mile.
About 45 minutes later, at 11:25 p.m., a magnitude 2.0 earthquake struck approximately nine miles south-southeast of Weingarten, or about 14 miles east of Farmington. The quake also occurred at a shallow depth of about 0.6 miles beneath the surface.
A third earthquake was recorded Tuesday morning at 10:28 a.m. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the magnitude 2.3 quake was centered nearly 4 miles east-northeast of Steele in Pemiscot County. That earthquake occurred at a depth of nearly 5 miles.
No injuries or damage have been reported from any of the three earthquakes.
While earthquakes of this size are generally considered minor, they are not uncommon in southeast Missouri because of the region's proximity to the New Madrid Seismic Zone, one of the most active earthquake regions east of the Rocky Mountains.
