St. Francois Co., Mo. (KFMO) - A public hearing was held prior to Tuesday’s St. Francois County Commission meeting to discuss the need to replace the roof on the St. Francois County Courthouse.
St. Francois County Maintenance Supervisor Brian Briley told commissioners the roof is experiencing ongoing issues.
Briley also noted the courthouse building is 99 years old, and the aging structure has led to concerns about the condition and longevity of the current roof. No members of the public spoke during the hearing.
During the regular commission meeting that followed, commissioners discussed options for addressing the problem and voted unanimously to apply for a Historic Preservation Fund grant through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The grant could provide up to $200,000 toward the cost of a new roof.
The total project is estimated at approximately $600,000. If the grant is awarded, the county would be responsible for covering the remaining roughly $400,000. Commissioners said pursuing the grant is an important step in preserving the nearly century-old courthouse and protecting the historic structure for future generations.
