Washington Co., Mo. (KFMO) - A Virginia man wanted in multiple jurisdictions on theft-related allegations has been arrested and charged in Washington County after investigators say he stole more than $1,300 worth of merchandise from the Walmart in Potosi.
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, deputies were contacted by the Ste. Genevieve Police Department at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 16 regarding a theft suspect believed to be traveling through the area. Authorities were advised that Cory Bevell of Williamsburg, Virginia, was driving a vehicle displaying Virginia license plates and had last been seen near Highway 21 and Memorial Drive.
Deputies searched the area but learned Bevell had already left Potosi and was headed toward St. Francois County. The St. Francois County Sheriff's Office later located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.
During the stop, investigators say Bevell provided deputies with false identifying information. However, when a deputy addressed him by his real name, authorities say he fled the scene on foot before being quickly captured and taken into custody.
Following the arrest, Washington County deputies contacted Walmart to determine whether Bevell had been inside the store. Surveillance and the subsequent investigation allegedly confirmed that Bevell entered the Potosi Walmart and stole more than $1,300 worth of merchandise.
Authorities also stated that Bevell is wanted by multiple jurisdictions throughout the United States in connection with theft investigations.
Bevell has been charged with Stealing - $750 or More, a felony under Missouri law. He is currently being held in the Washington County Jail on a $50,000 bond pending further court proceedings.
