April Recognized as Alcohol Awareness Month

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - April is Alcohol Awareness Month, bringing attention to the impact alcohol misuse can have on individuals, families, and communities.

The observance is intended to educate the public about the risks associated with excessive drinking, underage alcohol use, impaired driving, and alcohol dependency. It also encourages people to learn the warning signs of alcohol misuse and seek help when needed.

Across the United States, alcohol is a factor in more than 178,000 deaths each year. It is the fourth leading preventable cause of death in the country.

According to health experts, Alcohol Awareness Month is an opportunity to reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorders and promote honest conversations about prevention, treatment, and long-term recovery.

Community leaders and healthcare providers often use the month to remind the public that alcohol misuse can affect anyone, regardless of age or background. They also stress the importance of recognizing early warning signs, including changes in behavior, difficulty at work or school, relationship problems, and repeated risky decisions involving alcohol.

Officials say education and early intervention can make a significant difference. Families are encouraged to talk openly with children and teens about the dangers of alcohol use, while adults are reminded to drink responsibly and seek support if alcohol is negatively affecting their daily lives.

Resources are available through doctors, mental health professionals, local treatment centers, and support organizations. Those in crisis or in need of immediate help are encouraged to reach out to a healthcare provider or emergency services.

Alcohol Awareness Month is observed nationwide each April to promote understanding, prevention, and recovery support.
