Google Announces $15 Billion Investment in New Florence Data Center Project

Montgomery Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Google unveiled plans for a $15 billion infrastructure investment in New Florence during a community celebration Tuesday in Montgomery County.

The project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs during development and hundreds of permanent operational positions once the facility is completed.

Governor Mike Kehoe praised the investment, calling it a major step forward for Missouri’s growing technology sector and economy.

“Google's historic investment in Montgomery County is a testament to Missouri's growing reputation as a premier destination for innovation and next-generation technology,” Governor Kehoe said.

Kehoe said the investment goes beyond infrastructure and will help support Missouri families and communities through workforce development, local partnerships, and long-term economic opportunity.

Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat said the company is focused on helping Missourians benefit from the next generation of technology and innovation.

“We look forward to expanding Google's investments in Missouri and helping Missourians benefit from the next wave of American innovation,” says Porat.

Google says the project will include significant workforce development initiatives. The company is partnering with the Construction Laborers and Contractors Joint Training Fund of Eastern Missouri to help train more than 2,300 construction laborers over the next two years, including approximately 1,500 apprentices.

Google officials say the investment will also support Missouri’s skilled trades workforce through programs in Kansas City designed to prepare workers for careers in construction and technology-related fields.

In addition to workforce investments, Google announced a $20 million Energy Impact Fund aimed at helping lower monthly utility costs for Missouri residents in Montgomery County and surrounding communities.

One of the first recipients of the funding will be the North East Community Action Corporation, also known as NECAC, which plans to use the money for home repairs, energy efficiency upgrades, and expansion of its weatherization apprenticeship program.

Google also addressed concerns regarding energy and water usage tied to the data center project.

The company says it will pay for 100 percent of the power used by the facility, along with infrastructure costs directly related to the operation, under consumer protections outlined in Missouri Senate Bill 4.

Google says the New Florence facility will use advanced air-cooling technology designed to significantly limit water consumption.

Montgomery County Presiding Commissioner Ryan Poston called the project a transformational opportunity for the county.

“This project represents a major step forward in economic development - driving job creation, expanding our tax base, and creating resilient long-term growth for Montgomery County,” said Poston.

Economic development leaders say the project is expected to provide long-term tax revenue support for local schools, infrastructure, and public services while strengthening Missouri’s standing as a destination for technology and innovation.
