Madison County Sheriff’s Office Says Reported Suspicious Incident Appears to Be Misunderstanding

Madison Co., Mo. (KFMO) - The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says a suspicious incident reported earlier Friday and widely circulated on social media now appears to have been a misunderstanding.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators continued following up on the report throughout the day. Officials say the owners of the yellow Ford Mustang connected to the incident voluntarily came to the Sheriff’s Office and spoke with investigators.

After reviewing available camera footage and talking with nearby residents, investigators say they now believe the original report was likely a misunderstanding.

The Sheriff’s Office stressed that deputies will continue to take all reports involving child and community safety seriously.

In a statement, officials said, “When it comes to the safety of our children and community, our deputies will always investigate any possible lead. We will never apologize for taking concerns like this seriously.”

Authorities also clarified that previous calls involving the same vehicle were reported as suspicious vehicle complaints and were not connected to any incidents involving children. At the time of those earlier calls, deputies were unable to positively identify the vehicle or the people inside.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office thanked the community for bringing concerns forward and encouraged residents to allow investigators time to gather facts before drawing conclusions.
