Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - As more people head outside to enjoy seasonal activities, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is highlighting its network of shooting ranges available to hunters and recreational shooters across the state.
MDC operates five staffed shooting range and outdoor education centers, offering structured environments with trained staff and volunteers. These locations provide rifle, pistol, and archery ranges, along with educational programs covering hunting, wildlife identification, and other outdoor skills. A usage fee is required at these staffed facilities.
In addition, MDC maintains more than 35 unstaffed shooting ranges throughout Missouri. These ranges are free to use but require individuals to strictly follow posted rules and safety guidelines.
Officials emphasize that safety is a shared responsibility among all users. This includes maintaining clear communication on the firing line, handling firearms responsibly, and respecting fellow shooters.
MDC is also urging visitors to help preserve the quality of these public ranges by cleaning up after themselves. Shooters are expected to properly dispose of spent casings, targets, and trash, or pack them out if necessary. Respecting signage, backstops, and range structures is also essential to keeping facilities safe and accessible for everyone.
With increased outdoor activity this time of year, MDC says following these guidelines ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
