Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Following severe storms impacting the region, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance is encouraging residents to reach out if they have questions or concerns about their insurance coverage. Consumers can contact the department’s Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390 or visit insurance.mo.gov/consumers for assistance.
In 2025, the department’s Consumer Affairs Division recovered a record $46.2 million on behalf of Missouri consumers. Insurance specialists are available to help residents understand their policies, assist with claims, investigate complaints, and mediate disputes between policyholders and insurance companies.
“Missourians are no strangers to severe weather, but navigating insurance after a storm can be confusing and overwhelming,” said DCI Director Angela Nelson. “If you have questions about your coverage or need help understanding your policy or the claims process, our team is here to help, and our services are completely free. Let us be your first call.”
Residents whose property has been damaged are encouraged to document losses thoroughly by taking photos before making temporary repairs and keeping receipts for any emergency work. They should also contact their insurance provider as soon as possible to begin the claims process.
The department also offers a post-disaster claims guide along with additional resources to help residents navigate recovery after severe weather.
Officials say preparation is key for future storms. Residents are urged to review their insurance policies ahead of time to understand what is and is not covered, including deductibles, which may change at renewal and can vary by type of loss.
Most standard homeowners policies cover wind, hail, fire, and lightning damage, but flood and earthquake damage typically require separate policies.
The department also recommends completing a home inventory, including photos, receipts, and descriptions of personal property stored securely. Residents are also encouraged to protect their property by trimming trees, securing outdoor items, cleaning gutters, and performing routine maintenance to reduce storm damage risk.
The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance oversees insurance companies, banks, credit unions, utilities, and professional licensees operating in the state.
