NWS Confirms 5 Tornadoes Touched Down Sunday

(St. Louis, MO) Members of survey teams from the National Weather Service say a total of 5 tornadoes touched down last Sunday in Southeast Missouri and Southwestern Illinois. The first was an EF3 strength tornado with estimated peak winds of 150 miles per hour. It touched down near the St Francis River roughly 5 1/2 miles Southwest of Fredericktown, then traveled northeast until dissipating in Perry County. That storm was nearly 1/2 mile wide and traveled almost 20 miles. The second, also an EF3 with peak winds of 150 miles per hour, touched down between Highway H and Highway 67, about 5 1/2 miles southeast of Farmington. It traveled northeast through St. Mary before crossing the Mississippi into Chester, Illinois and running out of steam around a mile and a half northeast of the town of Bremen. That tornado was 450 yards wide and traveled nearly 43 miles. The third and fourth tornadoes were both rated as EF1 events. One touched down just outside of Johnson's Shut Ins State Park and the other hit Iron County. Finally, an EF0 twister hit in Washington County Illinois. According to National Weather Service reports there were no deaths from the storm. Only 2 injuries have been reported.
