Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - A large amount of used roofing shingles located along Old Jackson Road in Farmington has become the subject of discussion among the St. Francois County Commission as officials work toward resolving the issue.
District 2 Commissioner David Kater says the property where the shingles are located was originally purchased by the Wolf Creek Fire Protection District. The district later deeded the property over to St. Francois County so the county could take responsibility for addressing the large pile of shingles on the site.
According to Kater, the shingles must be processed to meet specifications set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources before any further action can be taken. To do that, the county is currently seeking bids for a grinder capable of shredding the roofing material to the proper standards.
Once the shingles are shredded, the Department of Natural Resources will provide guidance on what the county should do next with the material.
During last week’s commission meeting, Presiding Commissioner Harold Gallaher said one possible option could be to use the processed shingles as fill material, depending on what the state ultimately approves.
Once the issue with the shingles is resolved, the property will be deeded back to the Wolf Creek Fire Protection District. The district’s long-term plans for the property include creating a direct access route to Highway OO and using the land for firefighter training activities.
County officials say they will continue working with state regulators and contractors as they move forward with resolving the situation.
