Washington, D.C. (KFMO) - The winter surge of flu-like illnesses and other contagious infections continues to rise across the country.
According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 5,000 people have died from the flu this season, and over 120,000 have been hospitalized. Infectious disease physician Dr. Martin Topiel emphasizes the seriousness of the situation.
A new flu strain, which has dominated the season overseas, is now spreading widely in the U.S. and is largely driving the increase in cases.
Health officials urge the public to take precautions, including vaccination, frequent handwashing, and staying home when sick.
