Measles Cases Rise Nationwide, Health Officials Urge Vigilance

Washington, D.C. (KFMO) - Measles cases are continuing to surge across the United States, raising concern among health professionals.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 171 new measles cases across nine states so far this year. South Carolina accounts for the majority of those cases, with 145 reported infections. Health experts warn the illness can have serious long-term impacts, especially for children.

Dr. Celine Gounder says measles does more than cause a rash and fever.

According to the CDC, more than 2,200 measles cases were recorded nationwide last year, the highest total since the disease was declared eradicated in the United States more than two decades ago. At this time, there are no reported cases of measles in Missouri.

Health officials continue to stress the importance of vaccination to prevent the spread of the disease.
