Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - A round of accumulating snow is expected to begin across the area late tonight, bringing a period of wintry travel conditions to the Parkland through Saturday morning. Snow is forecast to develop between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., with most locations in St. Francois and surrounding counties seeing snowfall begin between 2 and 4 a.m.
The heaviest snow will fall Saturday morning between 6 a.m. and noon, when snowfall rates may reach 1 to 1.5 inches per hour. This will also be the period when temperatures hover near 30 degrees before gradually warming into the mid- to upper-30s during the afternoon.
Forecasters expect the snow to be heavy and wet, and a changeover to rain will begin from southwest to northeast between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. No sleet or freezing rain is expected. Precipitation will taper off Saturday evening.
Snowfall amounts will vary widely, with most of the Parkland expecting only a trace to around an inch, mainly on grassy surfaces. Higher totals are forecast north of the I-70 corridor, where snow will last longer before the transition to rain.
While significant accumulation on roads is not expected locally, some slick spots may still develop Saturday morning, especially during the heaviest snowfall. Temperatures are expected to fall well below freezing again Saturday night and remain cold into next week.
