Bear Spotted in Terre Du Lac and Other Areas; Residents Urged to Stay Alert

Terre Du Lac, Mo. (KFMO) - Residents of Terre Du Lac and other communities are being encouraged to take precautions after numerous bear sightings have occurred over the last several days. Tuesday, a bear was spotted in the Terre Du Lac community, as well as, near Highways 8 and P in Park Hills.

According to Terre Du Lac officials, that bear was observed rummaging through trash in the Lac Carmel area. Officials emphasize that residents should not assume the animal will remain in that neighborhood, as bears are capable of traveling significant distances while searching for food.

Community members are being asked to remain vigilant and take steps to eliminate potential food sources that could attract the bear. Recommendations include securing garbage containers, avoiding leaving trash outdoors longer than necessary, bringing pet food indoors, and removing other attractants from around homes.

Residents are also encouraged to closely supervise pets, avoid leaving them unattended or tied up outside, and ensure children are aware of their surroundings when playing outdoors.

Officials stress that anyone encountering the bear should keep a safe distance. Residents should not approach the animal, attempt to feed it, or move closer to take photographs. Instead, they should allow the bear a safe path to leave the area.

At this time, there is no indication the bear is establishing itself in Terre Du Lac or other communities. Wildlife officials believe it is likely moving through the area while searching for food. By removing attractants and giving the animal space, residents can help ensure the safety of both people and wildlife.

Officials also encourage residents to share the information with neighbors and remain especially alert during the early morning and evening hours, when bear activity is often more common.

Other bear sightings have also taken place in Iron County.
