Bonne Terre Police Increasing Speed Enforcement Along Route E

Bonne Terre, Mo. (KFMO) - The Bonne Terre Police Department is advising motorists traveling on Route E, also known as North Division Street, to pay close attention to changing speed limits as officers increase enforcement efforts in response to community concerns.

According to the department, the speed limit decreases from 55 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour at the north city limits of Bonne Terre, located north of Pine Creek Road and North Spruce Street.

Police say residents living along the corridor have reported concerns about speeding vehicles and have requested additional enforcement. In response, officers have been directed to place greater emphasis on monitoring speeds in the area.

Authorities note that this section of roadway presents several unique challenges for drivers. The route includes hills, curves, limited sight distances, numerous side streets and driveways, a lack of usable shoulders, and steep drop-offs at the pavement edge. These factors can significantly reduce a driver's reaction time when unexpected hazards appear.

Officials warn that motorists may not see vehicles entering or crossing the roadway until the last moment, making excessive speed particularly dangerous. They also note that vehicles leaving the roadway could encounter steep embankments or other hazards, increasing the risk of serious injury crashes.

Drivers are encouraged to observe posted speed limit signs, reduce their speed before entering the city limits, and remain alert for traffic entering or exiting the roadway.

The Bonne Terre Police Department says traffic enforcement efforts along Route E will continue as part of its commitment to improving safety for residents and motorists alike.

Police are reminding everyone of a simple message: "Slow Down. Stay Alert. Arrive Safely."
