Bonne Terre, Mo. (KFMO) - A precautionary lockdown was issued at North County Primary School Friday afternoon after police responded to a report of a person experiencing a mental health crisis and threatening self-harm with a firearm near M.C. Black Road.
According to the Bonne Terre Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:30 p.m. on November 7. Because of the close proximity to the school, school resource officers were notified and safety protocols were put in place. Officials emphasized that no threats were made toward the school and the individual never entered school property. The lockdown was enacted strictly as a precaution.
Officers arrived within minutes and learned the subject had fled into a wooded area nearby and was confirmed to be armed. Bonne Terre Police, along with deputies from the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department, pursued the individual into the woods east of M.C. Black Road. The subject was eventually disarmed and taken into custody without injuries.
The person was transported to the St. Francois County Jail pending charges. Police say crisis intervention procedures were initiated and, with the assistance of the individual’s family, an application for a mental health evaluation was submitted.
The Bonne Terre Police Department expressed gratitude to assisting agencies, including the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department, St. Francois County Ambulance District, Missouri State Highway Patrol, North County School District and its school resource officers, Farmington Fire Department, and St. Francois County 911.
Officials say the situation was resolved quickly and peacefully.
