CBS News Radio to Shut Down After Nearly a Century

New York, Ny. (KFMO) - CBS News Radio is shutting down this spring, ending a nearly 100-year run as one of the nation’s longest-standing radio news services. CBS News announced Friday, March 20, 2026, that the network will end programming on May 22, citing “challenging economic realities” and shifting radio programming strategies.

The shutdown affects a national radio service carried by about 700 affiliate stations across the country, including AM1240 KFMO. Reports also indicate all positions within the CBS News Radio unit are being eliminated as part of the closure.

CBS News Radio traces its roots back to 1927 and has long been a major source of national and world news for stations and listeners across the country. Its closure marks the end of an era in broadcast journalism and network radio news.

Dustin Kopp, Program Director of AM1240 KFMO, says the loss will be felt by stations and listeners who have depended on the network for decades.

“CBS News Radio has given our listeners complete and accurate national news for many years,” Kopp said. “We are saddened that the decision has been made to shutdown a news organization that has been in service for nearly a century.”

For many affiliates, the shutdown represents more than just the loss of a news service. It signals another major shift in the changing landscape of radio and broadcast news as legacy networks continue adapting to new audience habits and digital platforms.
