Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - Very cold air is moving into the Farmington area this weekend, with the coldest temperatures expected Saturday night into Sunday morning.
The National Weather Service says temperatures near zero, combined with wind, may create dangerously cold wind chills between ten below and twenty-five below early Sunday. The City of Farmington is urging residents to take precautions, reminding the public that all city-operated buildings open during normal business hours may be used as warming locations. That includes City Hall, Development Services and City Light & Water, the Civic Center, and the Farmington Public Library. The Police and Fire Departments are open 24/7.
Emergency overnight shelter is available at the Uplift Emergency Winter Shelter on Wallace Road, operated by East Missouri Action Agency. Additional options include the Southeast Missouri Family Violence Council and Shared Blessings Transitional Housing in Bonne Terre. Farmington Emergency Management Director Josh McAtee encourages residents to check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
The Public Works Department also advises homeowners to protect pipes from freezing during the cold spell.
For transportation to a shelter, residents can call Central Dispatch at 573-431-3131.
