Dangerous Heat and Humidity Grip the Parkland Through the Week

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - Residents across the Parkland are being urged to take precautions as a prolonged period of dangerous heat and humidity settles into southeast Missouri.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect until midnight Friday for St. Francois, Iron, Madison and Washington counties. Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve Counties are under an Extreme Heat Warning through the same time period due to the potential for even higher heat index values.

Forecasters expect afternoon high temperatures to reach the mid to upper 90s, while the combination of heat and humidity will produce heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees across much of the region. Areas under the Heat Advisory are expected to experience several consecutive days of heat index values above 100 degrees, while Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve Counties could see heat index readings of 105 degrees or higher.

There is some uncertainty in Friday's high temperatures as scattered showers and thunderstorms develop, but forecasters say the high humidity is likely to remain in place through the Fourth of July holiday.

Health officials encourage residents to limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day and take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses. Those working or participating in outdoor activities should:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Know the location of nearby cooling centers or shelters if needed.

Anyone experiencing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should seek immediate medical attention.
