Elevated Fire Danger Across the Parkland Today

Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - Parkland residents are being urged to use extra caution today as elevated fire danger impacts the entire region.

The warning includes St. Francois, Iron, Jefferson, Madison, Ste. Genevieve, and Washington Counties, where dry conditions and weather patterns are creating an environment where fires can start easily and spread rapidly.

Fire officials say even a small spark could quickly turn into a dangerous grass, brush, or field fire under current conditions. Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid outdoor burning, properly extinguish cigarette butts, and avoid stopping or parking vehicles on dry vegetation, which can ignite from hot exhaust systems.

Area fire departments have already been busy battling fires, highlighting just how quickly conditions can become dangerous.

Farmington Fire Chief Kyle Carter says the department provides residents with a way to check whether burning is allowed in the city before they light anything outdoors.

Residents who want to find out if burning is permitted in the City of Farmington can call 573-756-2324 and select option 1 for the latest information.

Officials are reminding everyone that taking a few simple precautions can help prevent fires and protect homes, property, and first responders during these dangerous conditions.
