Farmington Opens Cooling Centers as Heat Index Nears Dangerous Levels

Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - The City of Farmington is reminding residents that multiple city facilities are available as cooling centers as extreme heat impacts the region.

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values are expected to climb at or above 108 degrees today. Officials warn that hot temperatures combined with high humidity can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke if precautions are not taken.

To provide relief, the city is opening several locations where residents can cool down during operating hours:

Emergency Management Director Josh McAtee is encouraging residents to take the heat seriously, especially during the hottest part of the day.

“Limit outdoor activity whenever possible or schedule tasks for early morning or evening hours,” officials advise. Residents are also urged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and take frequent breaks if working outside.

City officials also stress the importance of never leaving children or pets inside vehicles, even for short periods. Residents should also check on neighbors who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat, including older adults and those with chronic health conditions.

If someone is suspected of experiencing heat stroke, officials say to call 911 immediately.
